Rola Pipa Ilha do Pico 2020

It is said that it was Friar Pedro Gigante back in the 15th century who planted the first vineyards on Pico Island in the Azores. There are currently three noble indigenous varieties. Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho, and Terrantez do Pico, which survived within the stone corrals.

A blend of the 3 'noble' varieties of the island, the Rola Pipa was aged in a slightly different way to what would be traditional, with no oak. It was aged on lees for 10 months, in stainless steel tanks. This has ensured a startling minerality, but has also added weight, texture, and complexity. Remaining in stainless steel helps to preserve the vibrancy of flavours, balancing crispness, and natural salinity.

The name Rola Pipa comes from the name of channels that were excavated out of the ground - hard volcanic lava - to create a ramp from the winery directly into the sea. Historically, to get wines to the port, on neighbouring island of Faial, for long-haul journeys, the barrels would be rolled down the ramp and into the sea. From here they were picked out of the water and on to barges, where they could be taken to the port.

Monthly wine tasting

Drank the Rola pipa last night at our tasting, everyone really enjoyed, very mineraly on the palate, which you would expect from a volcanic island. Florally with hints of fruit, went well with seafood and cheese. Only criticism is the price but for a tasting it didn’t matter.
