Sometimes you get magical moments while working in the shop, tasting this wine was one of them. Butler liked it so much he didn't even write a tasting note, he poured himself another glass and asked "how much can we buy?".
Domaine de Lorient is a new winery, set up seven years ago by Laure Colombo and Dimitri Roulleau-Gallais. Laure's father Jean-Luc Colombo is also an influential winemaker and on hand if needed.
St Peray is west of Valence in the northern Rhone. Laure and DImitri have 5.5 hectares of vines in amongst their smallholding where they have an orchard and livestock. They have created a natural biodiversity, by farming sustainably and biodynamically, in pursuit of the finest quality.
It is a Roussanne Marsanne blend, from vineyards planted at high altitude on granitic rock. They add little or no sulphur, and a minimal amount of oak ageing ensures freshness. This is a luscious, complex, highly enjoyable wine right from the get go. It is packed with fruit, layers of flavour, and an underlying acidity which keeps it bright.
One of the best white wines we have tried this year.
