Founded in 2008 by veteran winemakers Alex Krause and John Locke, Birichino, of Santa Cruz, California, source fruit from some of the finest vineyards in the region - many planted in the 19th and early 20th century. These vineyards tend to be family-owned and mostly occupy cooler marine-influenced microclimates.
Scylla is a blend Grenache (15%) and Mouvèdre (7%), both from over 100 year old vines, and Carignan (78%) from two vineyards near the town of Lodi, planted in CA. 1920. The fruit is vinified in a rustic fashion - the grapes are fermented, some on stems, by wild yeast. The wine is then pressed into old, relatively inert oak barrels for ageing. The finished wine is bottled without fining or filtration
Together these parcels produce a wine of focused, high-toned, bright red fruit with an undercurrent of something more savory, wild, and dark. The wine is matured in neutral barrels before bottling without filtration.
Juicy, morish and fleshy. A very heady wine indeed.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
