The Talley family winemaking approach starts with a laser-like attention to detail across the estate's six vineyards in coastal San Luis Obispo County. In the winery, things are much more hands-off. With their Pinot Noirs, the mission is "Burgundian style with a California influence" - allowing the grapes of each vineyard to express their personality and their origin without heavy oak influence.
The Stone Corral vineyard is only a few miles from the Pacific coast, meaning the gentle sunshine and cool weather Pinot Noir loves best. This translates into wines of real delicacy and verve, retaining the juicy acidity that signifies the very best Pinots.
The fruit character is bright and lively - raspberries, cranberries and red plums - but there are layers of violets above it and earthy forest floor below. All of that energy is held in check by the silky tannins, which are neatly plumped out by judicious oak contact. The spicy, sappy finish just keeps going and going.
