Helter Skelter NV

This is a quirky, unique wine, made exclusively for us at Butlers. As well as a nod to the iconic seafront ride Helter Skelter, it refers to the sometimes chaotic, topsy turvy, but never boring life at Butlers. It is 100% Viognier, a grape variety which many of you will be familiar with, but bottled with a difference. Wine maker Pieter has access to a block of Viognier on the Helderburg mountains, facing Stellenbosch. Half the fruit of this wine was picked in 2017, half of which was picked early, half picked late, all of this was then aged in oak. This comprises 50% of this wine. The second half was 2018 fruit, all of which was picked early, it was also aged in oak, then blended with the 2017 fruit. I hope this makes sense! The wine has to be labelled Non Vintage, because it is a blend of two different harvests.

Gabrielskloof Elodie Swartland Chenin Blanc 2018

This wine is light golden in colour with subtle aromas of apricot and white floral notes which settle into layers of almond, orange peel and herbs. The palate is richly textured with great natural acidity and freshness which is typical of old vine Chenin.

The two vineyards used to make this wine are situated in the Paardeberg region of the Swartland. Both are estimated to be over 40 years old. They are dryland bush vine vineyards and have never been irrigated. These vineyards are very labour intensive to farm and, as a result of the arid conditions, yield little fruit (between one and three tonnes per hectare).

Restless River Ava Marie Chardonnay 2017

Restless river has quickly reached cult status among many South African wine lovers, although they haven't been around that long, the wines they have created are of the highest quality. The vines they look after are some of the oldest in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This coastal region far away from the bulk producers based around Cape Town is highly regarded as one of the best climates to produces wines from.

Each bottle of this showcases what's possible with Chardonnay, the balance between the power and elegance. Big rounded notes of toffee and popcorn are supported by exciting acidity and citrus, this is a statement in a bottle.

The Liberator Ps I Love You 2016

P.S. I Love You’ was sourced from some of the 14-hectares of Durif (aka Petite Sirah) planted in the Cape. The wine is very nice. For best results decant it for 10 minutes as it really opens up quickly. Its soft, medium bodied, full of bramble fruit flavours with a gentle juicy finish. Surprise the one you love with this wonderful bottle, or treat yourself.

Keermont Syrah 2015

This is a blend of three different Syrah vineyard sites, known as Steepside, Topside and Sweetwater. Steepside is a North facing slope comprising of deep, red clay-rich soils, which produce powerful full bodied wines with rich, spicy flavours. Topside is an unirrigated west facing vineyard planted at 400m above sea level on rocky sandstone-based soil. Topside Syrah is usually a more aromatic wine with good structure and natural acidity. Sweetwater  is the coolest of the three Syrah sites and ripens the latest. Sweetwater Syrah is normally lighter and elegant in style with a herbal aroma.

It has a fragrant aroma profile of wild flowers, sweet cherries and plenty of spice. The palate is elegant and focused with a clean, linear acidity. It has an exciting cherry and plum flavour with notes of spice and earthiness. The tannins are vibrant and tight, and the wine has a long, succulent, herbal finish.

Badenhorst Family Red 2017

AA Badenhorst is a family run estate, owned by cousins Hein & Adi. Their family have over 50 years’ experience in South Africa’s wine industry, with their grandfather managing the iconic Groot Constantia. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner.

This is a blend of Shiraz, Cinsault, Grenache and Tinta Barocca. The grapes are hand selected before being crushed by foot stomping to start the natural fermentation, its then left in the tank for 6 months on the skins before spending 16 months in oak to develop. A rich and powerful wine with herbaceous notes, there is plenty of fruit on the nose and palate which compliments the big structure of the wine.
