Here is a grape variety we’re excited about at Butlers at the moment, one there’s a chance you may not have heard of - Furmint!
So what’s Furmint all about? Furmint is the key grape variety associated with Hungary's most famous wine, the lusciously sweet Tokaji. The popularity of sweet Tokaji in Central Europe over the last few centuries has led to a significant increase in plantings of the variety, and winemakers across the country are now using it to produce dry, single variety wines. These wines often combine a rich texture with a bright acidity - making for an excellent food accompaniment.
We think this wine is a great introduction to the variety. You’ll find aromas of lime rind, pears and oranges. With a little bottle age it has developed a smokey edge and it’s 6 month maturation in tank prior to bottling provides a rounder finish to this otherwise super fresh wine.
Try with rich lemony fish dishes and strongly flavoured vegetables with pepper or mustard.
