Vina Bosconia Tinto Reserva Lopez de Heredia 2008

£33.50

Lopez de Heredia is one of the most iconic wine producers in the world. They have been perfecting their particular style of winemaking in Rioja for nearly 150 years. If you ever get the opportunity to visit, we strongly recommend you take up the invite. The cobweb clad labyrinthian cellars exude a fabulous history, and the smell of oak gives you a hint as to what style of wine they like to make.

The wine labels exemplify old style Rioja wine making and history, in a very good way. They make what would now be regarded as a traditional Rioja, which maximises oak ageing. When many producers have moved towards a more modern, fruit driven type of wine, for a younger audience, Lopez have continued to specialise in wines which embrace controlled oxidation. They choose to age their red, white and pink wines for many years in oak barrels, which results in complex layers of aromas and flavours.

Vina Tondonia is their most famous vineyard and wine, but they also have vineyards called Vina Cubillo, Vina Zaconia and this wine Vina Bosconia. All are in the highly regarded Rioja Alta sub region. The Bosconia vineyard produces wines lighter in body than the Tondonia, they have an elegance akin to a red Burgundy. It is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, aged in oak for a minimum of five years. This has lovely purity and finesse, a real treat.
