Viña Carmen is Chile’s oldest winery. It was set up in 1850 with a founding focus on exporting its wines - which means quality has always been the priority.
Innovation is a Viña Carmen hallmark too. This was the producer that rediscovered Carménère in its vineyards in the 1990s, over a century after the variety was thought to have been lost to phylloxera. So we ultimately have them to thank for the phenomenon that is Chilean Carménère!
And here’s another reinvented classic, in the shape of a beautiful Frida Kahlo-inspired limited edition bottle encasing a generously oak-aged, multi-layered Cabernet. It’s dripping with cherries and black plums but the oak adds rounded vanilla and toasty notes plus a lingering lick of smoke on the finish. The fruit is ripe and rich, the tannins are nice and rounded, the acidity keeps everything fresh. A minor masterpiece.
