Domaine Berthelemot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2022

A relatively young domaine, founded by Brigitte Berthelemot in 2006, this Meursault-based estate has quickly developed a reputation for its fine, elegantly styled wines. Now joined in the business by her son, they manage a patchwork of parcels throughout the Cote de Beaune. Working sustainably, certified by HVE, from the outset, in 2018 they began conversion to organic viticulture with vintages from 2021 bearing organic certification.

Puligny-Montrachet is a village that needs little introduction, sitting at the very top of the pyramid of quality and prestige in white Burgundy. The Premier Cru La Garenne is one of the smaller climats of the village, higher up the slope toward the hamlet of Blagny, with very poor soil on chalky bedrock. The Berthelemot's plot contains some old vines planted in 1935, digging deep into the chalk and contributing to the outstanding complexity of the wine. Barrel-fermented and aged, with around 25% new wood.

Initially subtle on the nose, with white flowers, almond and lemon, this wine opens up beautifully in the glass to reveal deeper tones of quince, pear and cream. On the palate it is intensely mineral and pure, with an exceptionally long, steely finish. A beautiful wine already, especially paired with fine seafood, this will gain in weight and complexity for the next decade if you wish to cellar it.
