A blend of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer with 10 days of skin contact, making an orange wine. Artisan brings us to a different universe of flavours! It is definitely spicy and exotic, slightly hoppy and freshly grounded white pepper, pink grapefruits, mandarin as well and mango skin and lychee flavours. Fresh and flavoursome as we like it, this wine is original and addictive. To be consumed slightly chilled.
Their gewurztraminer is especially richly textured with just the right amount of spice. It is also extremely good value. Renée and Bruno’s son François Sorg is now in charge, making lovely gewurz, all tropical fruit flavours with a little sweetness and some freshness too.
Bruno Sorg is the estate, they are based in Alsace in eastern France. Although northerly, Alsace is a warm, dry region, protected from the weather by the Vosges mountains. This particular wine in made from the Gewurztraminer grape. Gewurztraminer refers to spice garden. It can often feel like it is off dry, really floral on the nose and quite rich for a white wine, which holds up to spicy food really well.
This wine is traditionally made from our blend of Chardonnay (2/3) and Auxerrois (1/3), both planted in 1989 in the Clos Windsbuhl vineyard. The cooler climate of the Windsbuhl, explained by its altitude and proximity of the forest, has preserved these grapes from the excessive heat waves of 2015. The Muschelkalk limestone also contains a significant amount of clay that keeps the soil cooler and improves its water retention capacity. A slightly later flowering also meant less coulure problems, so the vineyard produced a generous crop in 2015! The fermentation was slow, as usual with this clos, but the wine shows a perfect final balance.
Pale yellow colour. Fresh fruity (citrus) nose with medium intensity for the moment as it clearly needs to open up. The palate is pure and clean, not marked by the long lees contact. The immediate sensation is of how much this wine is already enjoyable! No excess weight, nicely balanced and surprisingly ready. The limestone soil is obvious on the finish. The acidity and stony flavours are a characteristic of the vineyard, what is less common, is the amount of tannins (fruit tannins, no new oak there) that give a long finish and a dry firm structure.
Made with carefully selected grapes from superior plots, this is a rich, ripe and rounded, although still dry, wine. Pale golden yellow with floral and spice aromas, very textural with a long, slightly smoky finish.
Perfectly compliments exotic flavours along with fish, chicken or vegetable dish, particularly if you are cooking with Thai or Asian spices, ginger or chilli.
A pure fruit driven nose, perfumed with cut limes and a hint of petrol. The wine has a perfumed honeyed palate and is intensely fruity with white peach flavours and mineral complexity. The finish is dry, refreshing and beautifully balanced, and incredibly open for a young Alsace Riesling.
The ideal 'food' wine, the fine citrus characters make this Riesling the perfect partner for fish, seafood and shellfish. Good with poultry, particularly roast chicken and hearty summer salads.
