Meet a luminary of Spanish wine – Alberto Orte! Embarking on his journey at the young age of 24, he co-founded the esteemed Olé & Obrigado, a US-based importer specializing in Spanish wines. A multifaceted figure, Alberto is a farmer, producer, and historian rolled into one. A significant part of his life has been dedicated to the exploration, identification, and preservation of ancient grape varieties and clones. His remarkable achievements include the revival and re-planting of over 20 grape varieties teetering on the edge of extinction, with a staggering tally of 200+ old clones of Palomino Fino and Palomino Jerez.
Beyond his ventures in Jerez, Alberto crafts wines from extraordinary sites in Yecla, Rioja, and, as exemplified here, Valdeorras. Enter a mind-blowing, gracefully matured Mencia sourced from a single high-elevation site nestled on slate and granite soils in Valdeorras, often referred to as 'the gateway to Galicia.' This wine exudes a Pinot-esque character while maintaining its distinct Spanish personality, featuring notes of dried rose petals, cherry fruit, and clove. Its gentle sapidity is complemented by nuances of orange oil, pencil shavings, and a delightful acidity.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
