Cadalso de los Vidrios is a village in the Gredos mountains to the west of Madrid, a region that has received a lot of attention in the last 10 years for the beautiful wines from its high altitude vineyards. The Agricola de Cadalso is a co-operative of growers in the area around the town founded in 1956, working together to preserve their local winegrowing heritage. Due to the challenging nature of farming in this mountainous region and the demand for land for property development 80% of vineyards in the area had been lost by 2015. In stepped winemakers Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, the founders of the Comando G winery which has helped raise the profile of the region. With them helping to improve the winemaking the growers are able to make a better living from the wines, preventing the remaining vineyards being lost to development.
Alongside the region's signature Garnacha they also produce a delicious peppery Syrah from 20 year old vines grown at 700m altitude. It is made in concrete without any oak, preserving the juicy red and black berry fruits alongside an earthy mineral streak. A very drinkable Syrah with plenty of character, perfect for grilled lamb chops or sausages.

Whilst packing up to move internationally a friend died and I needed to organise an emergency case of something luscious to support the wake. This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
