Working in the high-altitude (~650m above sea level) Mamoja region of Sardinia, Francesco Cadinu produce remarkable wines from very old vineyards on highly weathered granitic soil. Low yields mean they only make around 5000 bottles a year across their entire range. Their main grape is Cannonau, a local strain of Grenache (Sardinians argue it is the origin of Grenache but this is disputed.)
The Perdas Longas is a selection from a number of vineyards, with a minimum vine age of 70 years. Very ripe fruit is hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously without the addition of selected yeasts, to better translate the character of the unique terroir.
The aroma is rich and intense with black cherry, plum and berry fruit, stony mineral notes and violet. Full-bodied with deliciously suave tannin and surprisingly bright acidity for a wine of this level of power delivering stunning length and freshness to the finish. Liquorice and clove vie with blueberry and blackberry compote in the lingering aftertaste. A wine for powerful flavours, try with oxtail, lamb shank or venison.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
