The Talha is the Portuguese amphora, and the town of Vila de Frades in the Alentejo has a special connection to this ancient method of winemaking. Talha dating back to the Romans have been found in the town, and they have been used for winemaking continually over the two millennia since.
Gerações de Talha are a winery working to keep this tradition alive, and share the wonderful Talha wines with more people as in the past nearly all of the wine in the area was for local consumption.
NaTalha Branco is an orange wine, made by fermenting white grapes with all of the skins, seeds and some stems in the clay Talhas for 4 months. The grapes used come from a field blend, including Antao Vaz, Roupeiro and Perrum.
Pouring a golden amber in colour, immediately the lovely perfume of mandarin oranges, dried apricot and pine fills the air. On the palate it is wonderfully drinkable, with soft tannins, lots of juicy citrus and stone fruits, hints of tarragon and cedar and a crisp finish. One of the very best orange wines we have tried and a wonderful introduction to the style.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
