Marquis de Calon is the second wine of Château Calon-Ségur, one of Saint-Estèphe’s oldest and most admired estates. The château’s history dates back to the Marquis de Ségur, whose heart-shaped emblem still appears on the label. The second wine comes mainly from younger vines and is made to be more approachable in its youth, while still reflecting the estate’s gravel-and-clay terroir and classic Left Bank style.
The 2016 shows dark berries, cassis and a touch of cedar on the nose, with hints of violets and subtle spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied, smooth and structured, offering ripe black fruit framed by fine, polished tannins. The finish is clean and persistent, with lingering dark fruit and gentle oak. A refined, accessible expression of Saint-Estèphe from an excellent vintage.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
