Founded in 1920 by Domenico Meroi in Buttrio, the heart of the Friulii Colli Orientali DOC in northeast Italy. Now run by Paolo Meroi, great-grandson of the founder, From the excellent terroir of the region, and their carefully tended organic vineyards, Paolo crafts some of Italy's most thrillingly complex white wines.
They acquired the Zitelle vineyard in 2007, the name, Italian for spinster, comes from it being formerly the property of the Order of the Nuns of the Unmarried. Planted in a former clay quarry, the rich red clay marl soil contributes to full-bodied and deep white wines. The local Malvasia variety thrives here, producing a wine of opulent richness and fabulous complexity, bolstered by ageing and fermentation in 80% new French oak barriques.
The aromatic and floral character of Malvasia is evident on the delightful nose, with tangerine, yellow peach, jasmine and honeysuckle alongside hints of spicy oak. Rounded and mouthfilling with masses of delicious fruit, herbal notes and a touch of cream.

Words can't express the brilliance of Butlers or the thoughtfulness, expertise and compassion of their team! Whilst packing up to move internationally a friend died and I needed to organise an emergency case of something luscious to support the wake. Not only did their wonderful team organise and deliver within an incredibly tight deadline they drafted a message for me too which I approved. Wonderful!!

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
