The wines of the tiny coastal region of Bucelas have a long and storied history in England - it was drunk by Shakespeare, Dickens and Byron and in the Victorian era often compared to the rieslings of the Rhine. Being just north of Lisbon, as the city has expanded much of the Bucelas vineyard has disappeared and there are now just 8 producers of this storied wine.
Joao Franca of Murgas is one such producer, dedicated to keeping the history of Bucelas alive, and making stunning wine in the process. Arinto is the grape here which, combined with the limestone soils and Atlantic influence, gives wines with an excellent minerality and spine of acidity. 20% of the wine is fermented and aged in used French oak with the remainder in steel and it is aged for 8 months on the lees to round out the texture.
Intense lemony fruit is complemented by toast, cedar and sea breeze aromas on the nose. The palate is pure, concentrated and bone dry with stunning length - this is definitely a wine for fans of great Chablis or dry riesling, with bags of minerality and citrus fruits.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
