Situated in the stunning Leitheberg region of Austria's Burgenland, where the last foothills of the Alps meet the wide, shallow Lake Neusiedl, you will find the vineyards of Weingut Prieler. A family located in the area since the 1400s, it was current winemaker Georg's grandfather who first put wine into bottle from the vineyards on their mixed farm. Since taking over in 2012 Georg has converted all of their vineyards to organic farming and has become one of the masters of the beautiful but finicky Blaufrankisch grape.
The Johanneshohe comes from a careful selection of Blaufrankisch grapes from their Leithaberg vineyards, on 'muschelkalk' limestone soils. After fermentation the wine ages for around 2 years in large Austrian oak barrels, to soften the edges and allow the flavours to blossom.
A wine with wonderful poise, with lots of blackberry and Victoria plum fruits, black pepper and violet notes. This dark opening suggests a heavy and dense wine, but this is effortlessly drinkable with fine, silky tannins and lovely freshness. The kind of wine you can't stop yourself from pouring another glass of, as it unfurls layers of berries, herbs and minerals in the suave finish. A charmer, and perfect for pairing with roast lamb or game.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
