Andre Van Rensburg was head winemaker at Vergelegen for 25 years, establishing himself among the upper echelon of South African winemakers. Famous for his perfectionism in the vineyard and cellar, along with his outspoken and no-nonsense demeanour, Van Rensburg has now turned his attention solely to his own eponymous label.
This is the first vintage for his new Chardonnay and we were lucky to be among the first in the country to try it! Sourced from a vineyard in the cool Overberg region, where high altitude and cool breezes from Walker Bay produce grapes with high natural acidity and minerality.
It is a super classy Chardonnay, with its oak very well in balance. Savoury toasty and stony notes sit alongside fresh apple and lemon fruit on the nose; the palate is broad and focused, with a very long minerally finish and some subtle white peach notes. The mouthwatering finish is just calling out for some juicy prawns or scallops, and I suspect this has potential to fill out more depth in the cellar if you desire.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
