Chateau Rol Valentin Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2016

A tiny Chateau in Saint Emilion, Rol Valentin produces just 25,000 bottles a year of its prized grand vin. Their vineyards a split across two locations, one richer in limestone beneath the clay and one with a lighter sandy soil. The average age of their vines is around 40 years, which is uncommon in Bordeaux where vineyards are commonly replanted after 15-20 years. To care for these mature vines they farm sustainably, certified HVE level 3, and herbicides have never been used at the estate.

2016 is one of the most widely acclaimed Bordeaux vintages of the 21st century, and this stunning wine has began to open up beautifully after a few years resting in the cellar. 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc, the winemaking team meticulously hand sort all of the fruit before fermenting in small, open-top vessels. Aging in French oak lasts 14-16 months, mellowing the tannin and adding to the complexity.

A big but elegant style, with supple tannins and delightful freshness. Violet and lavender notes accompany the rich red cherry and plum fruit, with a hint of cinnamon and star anise on the nose. The palate is luxuriously velvety, the big tannins finely managed to give it gorgeous shape and length. A gorgeous partner for stewed meats or strong and aged cheeses.
