Hervé Dubourdieu has earned a quiet reputation as one of Bordeaux’s great traditionalists, a winemaker whose charm and humility obscure his relentless pursuit of perfection. Château Roumieu-Lacoste, nestled in the limestone soils of Haut-Barsac, has been in Hervé’s family since 1890, passed down through his mother’s side. Today, his meticulous touch brings out the very best of this historic terroir. Hervé Dubourdieu is also behind the acclaimed Château Graville-Lacoste (Graves Blanc) and Château Ducasse (Bordeaux Blanc), both celebrated for their fresh, Sémillon-led blends. At Roumieu-Lacoste, his approach produces a robust, powerfully styled Sauternes, one that can be enjoyed young for its exuberance or cellared for decades as it develops complexity and silkiness.
The 2022 Roumieu-Lacoste is a ravishingly rich and aromatic dessert wine. Layers of apricot, candied orange peel, honey and vanilla are lifted by zesty citrus and spice. While undeniably decadent, it’s the shimmering acidity that defines this wine, balancing its luscious sweetness with a precise, refreshing edge. The finish is long, vibrant and deeply satisfying.
Don’t save this just for dessert, its versatility is part of its charm. Enjoy it as an indulgent apéritif, with pâté, or alongside blue cheese, roast chicken, or even freshly shucked oysters for a bold, savoury twist. And yes, it’s heavenly with fruit tarts, crème brûlée, or simply on its own, as dessert in a glass.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
