Coume del Mas was established by Philippe and Nathalie Gard in 2001 and now encompasses around 15 hectares of vines, primarily situated on the steep slopes around Banyuls sur Mer. In this unique location where the mountains meet the sea, viticulture is a labour-intensive endeavour. The terrain is so challenging that tractors and even plough horses are unable to navigate most of the vineyard.
The estate specializes in sweet wines, which are fortified during fermentation to retain natural residual sugars, resulting in a final alcohol content of about 16%. Approximately 95% of their production is sweet red wine, reminiscent of Port but softer and with lower alcohol content. This wine is produced under one of France's oldest appellations, established in 1936.
Made with Grenache Gris to produce a sweet white. The wine is fermented in tank, then aged in barrel after fortification for 6 months. Fresh fruit, patisseries, apple or lemon tart.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
