A very fine and elegant wine from close to Lake Garda. Fresh and fruity with citrus and stoned fruit, almond, spice, and a clean minerality. A delicious wine.
Nunzio Ghiraldi grows Trebbiano di Lugana near Lake Garda. Trebbiano is often associated with poor quality, bland wines. However this particular strain of Trebbiano is known as Turbiana, which is a much different kettle of fish all together, and is similar to Verdicchio. Nunzio's grandfather took the opportunity to purchase the Podere Sant'Onorata in the early 1950s.
It has a beautiful position looking across the hills and lake with nearby mountains as a backdrop. The vineyards are planted on ancient clay soil, rich in mineral salts, which help add a laser like precision to the wine.
The wines are made with the minimum amount of human input, the vines are old and very particular ancient strains. This is backed up with ergonomic design in the winery and use of modern technology. This results in a wonderfully pure, stylish white wine, showing class and elegance.
Butler was lucky enough to have dinner there, he is neither elegant or classy, and reports that they had a few older vintages which were brilliant. SO if you forget to drink this wine, do not worry as it ages really well.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
