Luis Pato is widely regarded as the person who put the wines of Bairrada on the world map. He started making wines in 1980, ten years after his father started bottling the first Bairrada wines, once the region was legally recognised.
He is a charismatic winemaker, who we like a lot, who makes wine combining science, technology and tradition. Bairrada is a region in between Porto and Lisbon, it produces very traditional Portuguese wines!
Luis Pato's flagship red comes from a selection of old vineyards and therefore different soil types, with all vines over 40 years old (and some much older). This includes a small part coming down from the top Pan and Barrosa cuvees. Stainless steel vinification with a over a year aging in used French barrels results in a fantastic red wine, so very typical of the region and the Baga grape variety.
The addition of Bical comes in the form of pressed skins. Luis believes the addition of tannin from white grapes enhances those of the red.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
