Ronco del Gnemiz is a small, quality-focused estate in the Colli Orientali hills of Friuli, known for working carefully with old vineyards rooted in the region’s distinctive ponca soils of marl and sandstone. The winery’s approach centres on expressing these sites with precision: fermentations are spontaneous, oak is used with restraint, and the wines are allowed to develop texture and depth through patient time on lees. Their Chardonnay bottlings, including the single-vineyard “Sol”, are admired for combining ripeness with tension and a strong mineral thread.
The 2024 “Sol” opens with focused citrus tones, lemon, grapefruit, joined by hints of peach and light floral notes. There’s also an underlying stony character that keeps the aromas tight and lifted. On the palate the wine is taut and energetic, driven by fresh acidity that carries clean fruit and a subtle savoury-mineral note. The texture is fine and polished, offering just enough weight without feeling broad or creamy. The finish is long, cool and quietly persistent, leaving behind a crisp citrus impression and a touch of chalky minerality that speaks clearly of its hillside origins.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
