A tiny 4ha biodynamic estate in the Monferrato hills, Luigia Zucchi's Rugra has been producing wines in a natural way since 1992. Rather than a monoculture of just vines, his land includes woodland and other crops, emphasising natural biodiversity over high yields and control.
The Pruno Rosso Merlot comes from a single plot of half a hectare, fermented with wild yeasts in stainless steel with zero addition of sulphites at any point. It is not, however, a funky or wild tasting wine full of barnyard or cidery notes - it tastes very classic and fresh (I had a bottle open for 4 days and it remained squeaky clean!) Because a pure Merlot isn't permitted by DOC rules, he bottles this under 'Vino Varietale d'Italia'.
Expressive on the nose with red plum, cherry pit, tamarind and forest floor aromas. The palate is quite full-bodied, with a bit of tannic grip and fresh cranberry acidity. A superb red for pairing with all manner of food, especially tomato sauces and strong savoury flavours.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
