Located in the village of Santenay, at the southern end of the Cote de Beaune, Domaine Bachey-Legros are 6th generation wine growers. The defining trait across their 18ha is the possession of some of the oldest vines in the area, planted as far back as 1935. Delicate farming is required to care for these treasured old vines, and very small yields of fruit bearing wonderful concentration and 'gout de terroir' are the reward for doing so.
The Clos des Hates is a walled vineyard surrounded by many of the villages Premier Crus (a title it arguably deserves itself). This wine comes entirely from their 1935 plantings, these nearly 90 year old vines lending stunning depth and complexity to the wine. A classic cooler vintage, the 2021 is the kind of silky, red berry-scented wine that draws us to red Burgundy.
Raspberry, strawberry and red cherry notes with hints of wild flowers and earth soar invitingly from the glass. On the palate it has an immediate fruitiness, with beautiful soft tannins and refined spices in the finish. The perfect wine to elevate a simple roast chicken to gastronomic heaven!

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
