The Sattler family has an impeccable winemaking pedigree. Vines have grown on the 300-year-old family farm, located in the far south of Austria close to the Slovenian border, since 1887. In the 1960s, Will and Maria Sattler were in the vanguard of Austria's drive to produce estate-bottled quality dry white wines.
Today, with the reins passed down to Alexander (vineyards) and Andreas (winery), Sattlerhof is a byword for precise, elegant whites like this electric Sauvignon Blanc.
2018 brought harsh weather to South Styria, but Alexander battled to bring in top-quality fruit from across the hillside organic vineyards. Ripeness and acidity levels were excellent, joined in the final wine by complexity from wild fermentation and roundness from several months' lees ageing.
There are so many good things going on here, from the clean herbal nose to a palate soaked in rich stone fruit and aromatic pears. Through all of this and long after you've drained your glass, you'll be savouring the Alpine laser beam of acidity that pierces this gorgeous cool-climate wine.
