Seven of Hearts is the West Coast love affair of Byron and Dana Dooley, who moved north from California to Oregon in the early 2000s to begin their adventures with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They have been beavering away at their mission to produce complex, pure and elegant small-batch wines ever since.
The 2015 Chardonnay is made with grapes from two very distinct vineyard sources: one warm site providing fruit with ripe tropical elements; the other from nearer the coast providing fresher, more mineral fruit. These two parcels are carefully blended to harmonise their qualities, with judicious use of French oak adding to the chorus of flavours.
The concentration and complexity are what really stand out in this wine. The primary fruit is exotic and round, and the oak is held neatly in check, but there is that glorious line of citrus acidity and minerality running right through the long clean finish.
One word review: Alluring.
