Founded by Justin Willett in 2005, Tyler Winery is one of the most acclaimed producers in California’s new wave of terroir-focused winemaking. Based in Lompoc, the estate produces small-lot wines that capture the nuance and energy of Santa Barbara’s coastal vineyards. While Tyler first gained recognition for his crystalline Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, Willett’s exploration of Cabernet Sauvignon from Happy Canyon reveals his craftsmanship and sensitivity to this iconic place. Every Tyler wine is hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and aged with minimal intervention, a philosophy that prizes purity and expression over power. The 2021 grapes were hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented with native yeasts primarily in French oak (mostly neutral) before aging on fine lees.
In the glass you’ll find pale gold colour and aromas of crisp pear, white peach, quince, citrus peel and subtle floral tones. On the palate, bright green apple and stone-fruit intertwine with a chalky, saline streak and soft almond-nut nuance from the lees ageing. The mid-weight body carries a taut spine of acidity, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish with elegant poise.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
