Kopke Port The World's Oldest Port

Kopke Port The World's Oldest Port

When it comes to Port, few names carry the same weight of history and consistency as Kopke. Founded in 1638, Kopke is recognised as the oldest Port producer in the Douro Valley, with nearly four centuries of winemaking behind them. Long before Port became the globally recognised style it is today, Kopke was already shaping the identity of fortified wines from northern Portugal, a legacy that continues to this day.

While many historic Port houses are closely associated with Vintage declarations, Kopke has carved out a reputation for excellence across a broad spectrum of styles, with particular renown for their beautifully aged tawnies. Their approach combines deep respect for tradition with meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard, cellar and blending room, resulting in Ports that are elegant, expressive and incredibly drinkable.

A Brief History of Kopke

Kopke was founded by Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, a German-born merchant who settled in Porto during the 17th century. At a time when trade between Portugal and northern Europe was flourishing, Kopke began exporting wines from the Douro, laying the foundations for what would become one of the most enduring names in Port.

Over the centuries, Kopke remained fiercely independent, focusing on quality rather than scale. Today, the house is part of the Sogevinus group, alongside other prestigious Douro producers, but Kopke’s identity remains firmly rooted in craftsmanship, long ageing and an uncompromising focus on balance which is why they are some of our favourite styles.

How Kopke Port Is Made

Like all traditional Ports, Kopke’s wines begin life in the steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Grapes are grown on schist soils, which help regulate water and heat, producing concentrated, characterful fruit.

Fermentation is stopped part-way through by the addition of grape spirit, preserving natural sweetness and boosting alcohol. From there, the wines follow different ageing paths depending on style:

  • Ruby-style Ports are aged in large vats to preserve fresh fruit and vibrancy

  • Tawny Ports are aged oxidatively in smaller oak casks, developing complex nutty, caramel and dried fruit flavours

  • White Port is made from white grape varieties and can range from dry and fresh to richer, honeyed styles

Kopke is especially celebrated for its aged tawnies, where careful blending and extended maturation create remarkable depth and harmony.
