Orange Wines for Autumn

Orange Wines for Autumn

As the colours of autumn arrive and golden leaves line the streets, it feels like the perfect time for the contents of your glass to mirror your surroundings. With their amber hues, complex flavours, and food-friendly nature, orange wines are having their moment. And at Butler’s, we’re delighted to have a diverse range available for you to explore.

Orange wine isn’t named with the citrus fruit in mind, it’s a style of winemaking. White grapes are fermented on their skins (just as red wines are), giving the wine its deep colour and unique character. The result is often textured, aromatic, and versatile, somewhere between a white and a rosé in style.

These wines have ancient roots, with winemaking traditions going back thousands of years in Georgia, and today they’re celebrated worldwide for their bold flavours and natural charm.

Why Orange Wine Works With Autumn Food

Autumn is the season of comfort food: roasted squash, earthy mushrooms, root vegetables, and slow-cooked stews. Orange wines, with their grip, savoury edges, and notes of dried fruit, nuts, spice, and herbs, are the perfect match.

  • Squash & Pumpkin – the sweet, nutty flavours of roasted squash pair beautifully with the savoury and textured style of orange wines.

  • Root Vegetables – carrots, parsnips, and beetroot roasted with herbs and spices bring out the earthy depth of these wines.

  • Mushrooms & Pulses – lentil stews, risottos, or mushroom-based dishes find balance with the wine’s tannins and herbal character.

  • Cheese Boards – nutty, firm cheeses (like Comté or aged Manchego) are lifted by the aromatic complexity of orange wines.

And of course, their glowing amber colour feels like it was made for autumn gatherings.

Our Orange Wine Selection

Here are some of our favourites right now, each with its own unique expression:

Matic Postopoma Orange 2023 (Slovenia)

Slovenia is one of orange wine’s spiritual homes, and Matic has crafted a standout. Aromatic and lively, it shows citrus peel, apricot, and herbal tea notes, with gentle tannins giving grip. Fresh yet structured, it’s a natural partner for roasted pumpkin, spiced chickpea stew, or herby lentils.

La Mécanique du Vin Orange Wine 2024 (France)

Made in small batches with a minimalist touch, this wine bursts with dried citrus, chamomile, and a subtle nuttiness. On the palate, it’s clean and lifted, with a savoury finish. Try it with roasted root vegetables, a beetroot and goat’s cheese salad, or simply alongside crusty bread and autumn cheeses.

Pierre & Antonin Petit Sauvage Organic Orange Wine 2024 (France)

This organic cuvée is vibrant, expressive, and a little wild at heart. Expect flavours of stone fruit, citrus peel, and spice, with a textured palate and balanced acidity. It’s an easy-drinking orange but with plenty of character. Perfect with seasonal mushroom risotto or a roasted vegetable tart.

Kokomo Winery Breaking Bread Marmalade 2024 (California)

As its name suggests, this Californian beauty is packed with orange zest, dried apricot, and marmalade richness, backed by soft tannins and a textured, mouth-coating finish. A bolder style of orange wine, it pairs wonderfully with smoky aubergine dishes, BBQ cauliflower steaks, or even spiced curries.

Vindemiate Bacc’ and Fourth 2022 (England)

Featuring Butlers' cat Bear on the label! A ripe vintage gave them the opportunity to make a skin contact wine from excellent Bacchus fruit sourced from a vineyard in Essex. 30 days on the skins before 18 months lees ageing in a mixture of old barrels and stainless steel has given this wine delicious weight and texture. It’s floral and citrus-driven, with notes of peach, honeysuckle, and a savoury twist that keeps it lively. Smooth and complex, this is a brilliant companion for roasted butternut squash, creamy polenta, or earthy wild mushroom pasta.
