San Polo Rosso di Montalcino 2023

San Polo is located in Podernovi, on the southern slopes of Montalcino in the Sant’Antimo valley, with sweeping views across Tuscany to Mount Amiata. Since its acquisition by Marilisa Allegrini in 2006, the estate has combined respect for tradition with innovative, sustainable winemaking. The result is wines with personality and elegance, reflecting their terroir and the Allegrini family’s commitment to quality.

The grapes are sourced from three hectares of vineyard planted in 2000, set 450 metres above sea level on south and south-east facing slopes with chalky clay soils. Spur-cordon trained and densely planted at 7,000 vines per hectare, the vineyards yield just 49 hl/ha, ensuring concentration and purity of fruit.

After hand-harvesting and rigorous bunch selection, the grapes are gently pressed before fermentation in concrete tanks. Maceration on the skins lasts 14–16 days at controlled temperatures, extracting colour and structure while preserving freshness. The wine matures for 12 months in lightly toasted, second-use French oak barriques, followed by a month in bottle before release. Bright ruby in colour, it offers lifted aromas of fresh berries, Morello cherry and blackberry, delicately framed by notes of vanilla spice. On the palate it is fragrant and intense, with smooth, finely balanced tannins and a persistent, aromatic finish.

This Rosso di Montalcino is versatile and food-friendly, pairing beautifully with pasta in rich tomato sauces, roast lamb, or porcini mushroom risotto. Its balance of fruit, spice and freshness also makes it a delightful companion to charcuterie or a simple Margherita pizza.
