Albariño: The Summer Star of Galicia
As the sun blazes on and the seafood cravings rise, there's no better match than a chilled glass of Albariño. Crisp, zesty, and refreshingly aromatic, this coastal Spanish white has fast become one of our summer go-tos, and for good reason.
We’re celebrating this standout grape with three brilliant bottlings, each showing off a different expression of Albariño. Whether you’re new to the variety or already a convert, these are perfect picks for sunny lunches, garden parties and simply winding down with something bright and elegant.
So, what is Albariño? And where does it come from?
Albariño (pronounced al-ba-REEN-yo) hails from Galicia, a lush, green region in northwest Spain, known for its Atlantic coastline, fishing villages, and seafood-rich cuisine. The grape thrives in the region’s Rías Baixas DO, where the salty ocean breeze and granite soils shape its unmistakable character: citrus-led, floral, and full of freshness.
Think: ripe lemon and lime, white peach, saline minerality, and a lively acidity that makes Albariño incredibly food-friendly, especially with seafood, grilled vegetables, light cheeses, and tapas.
The Wines
Condes de Albarei La Huida Albariño 2024 – £15.99
Bright and breezy, this is a classic Rías Baixas Albariño from one of the region’s most respected co-operatives. Expect juicy notes of green apple, grapefruit, and a whisper of sea spray on the finish. Light, crisp, and dangerously drinkable, it’s the ideal aperitif or companion to freshly grilled prawns or a summery goat’s cheese salad.
Terras de Compostela Albariño Rías Baixas 2023 – £17.99
Made by a family-run estate near Santiago de Compostela, this wine takes things up a notch with a little extra texture and complexity. Lush peach and pear flavours are layered with lemon zest and subtle almond, giving it a richer feel on the palate. Pair it with grilled meaty fish, spiced chickpea dishes, or courgette fritters for a lovely balance of zing and depth.
Valminor Albarino 2024 – £18.49
This is the winery’s signature Albariño, grown on their own vineyards in O Rosal, one of the southern sub-regions of Rías Baixas, nestled between the Atlantic coast and the Miño River. Expect aromas of mandarin, peach, and orange blossom, followed by a lively palate of citrus and stone fruit, with a soft, floral finish and a gentle touch of honeysuckle. It’s vibrant and clean, yet rounded enough for easy drinking.
Pair with fresh mussels, oysters, or a seafood risotto to bring out the wine’s elegant maritime personality. This is Albariño in its purest coastal expression.
La Viña de Sofía Albariño 2024 – £21.49
A premium expression from a boutique winery, this is Albariño with elegance and finesse. It opens with jasmine and citrus blossom on the nose, leading to a mouthful of nectarine, lime, and wet stone. It’s incredibly refined, with a long, mineral finish. A brilliant match for scallops, herby pasta, or even a plate of padron peppers and Manchego.
Why we love Albariño
Albariño has exploded in popularity over the last few years and for good reason. It offers all the brightness of Sauvignon Blanc, the minerality of Chablis, and the floral charm of Viognier but with its own distinctly Atlantic edge. It’s approachable yet sophisticated, and perfect for pairing with all the dishes summer throws at us, from seafood feasts to veggie grills.
Whether you’re already a fan or discovering Albariño for the first time, now’s the time to dive in.
