Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge 2019

Superbly situated in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Larrivet Haut-Brion has flourished under the stewardship of the Gervoson family since 1987. Their dedication and passion have restored the estate to its former prestige, producing wines of elegance and character.  

The vineyard has expanded significantly from 17 hectares in 1987 to 72.5 hectares today, thanks to careful acquisitions and new plantings. The deep gravel soils, enriched by a well-drained clay matrix, provide the perfect foundation for crafting exceptional Pessac-Léognan wines.  

The 2019 vintage was shaped by a hot, dry summer that impacted yields, followed by a cooler, wetter period that refined ripening. Harvested between September 19 and October 1, the grapes yielded a wine of superb concentration and refined tannins, despite low yields of 35 hl/ha.  

Vinification involves meticulous hand-harvesting, optical sorting, and vinification in small, temperature-controlled concrete vats with extended maceration for four to five weeks. The wine is then aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new.  

A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion presents a deep garnet hue. The nose is rich and complex, offering aromas of stewed black fruits, warm spices, and liquorice. On the palate, it is opulent and fruit-driven, with intense flavours of blackcurrant and morello cherry, supported by firm, powerful tannins.  

This wine pairs beautifully with dishes like Chinese-style braised beef in reduced soy sauce, served alongside glazed vegetables, enhancing its depth and structure.
