Domaine Bott-Geyl Riesling Cru d'Alsace Grafenreben 2019

Since 1993, Domaine Bott-Geyl has been under the stewardship of Jean-Christophe Bott, the latest in a line of heirs to a rich familial heritage dating back to 1795, when Jean-Martin Geyl, his ancestor, first nurtured vines on these very grounds. Today, the estate proudly encompasses 15 hectares of vineyards, boasting 6 Grands Crus and 4 Lieux-dits. Across seven communes, spanning what is affectionately known as the 'Pearls of Vignoble', 80 distinct parcels of land contribute to the estate's diverse terroirs.

Beginning the transition to organic viticulture in 2000, and subsequently embracing biodynamic principles in 2002, the estate remains steadfast in its commitment to revealing the inherent, distinctive qualities of each terroir. Emphasizing minimal intervention and low yields, the vinification process is conducted with a delicate touch. Jean-Christophe's approach is a fusion of modern techniques and time-honoured viticultural practices, drawing from his experiences at esteemed wine estates across France, Germany, and the New World. Through this, he seeks to honour the legacies of both the Bott and Geyl families, ensuring their traditions endure and their wines continue to captivate generations to come.

The Riesling Grafenreben hails from a parcel in the Zellengerg municipality, regarded as a younger sibling to the esteemed Grands Crus of Alsace. Situated on a southeast-facing slope of clay and limestone, this vineyard offers an idyllic environment for cultivating Riesling, resulting in wines with saline notes and delicate hints of stone fruit and walnut.

It has a remarkable aging potential of approximately 15 years, with enjoyment typically achieved from the third or fourth year post-bottling. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine matures on lees for approximately 9 months before bottling, with only around 4,000 bottles produced annually.

This robust and characterful white wine exudes profound intensity and aromatic complexity on the nose. On the palate, it displays a dense yet refined texture, showcasing vibrant fruity flavours balanced by a refreshing acidity. A true gem deserving of appreciation and exploration.
