Pop the Cork for Prosecco Day!
There’s always a reason to open a bottle of Prosecco, but on13th August, we’ve got more than a few.
Prosecco Day is all about celebrating one of Italy’s most loved sparkling wines: fresh, vibrant, approachable and effortlessly enjoyable. The go-to bottle when you’re hosting friends, heading out into the garden or simply marking the moment, Prosecco is often the first choice for fizz.
But not all Prosecco is the same, and that’s part of the fun.
Frizzante vs Spumante: What’s the Difference?
At first glance, the difference comes down to bubbles, but there’s a bit more going on behind the scenes.
Both styles are typically made using theCharmat (tank) method, where the second fermentation, the stage that creates the bubbles, happens in large stainless steel tanks rather than individual bottles. This helps preserve Prosecco’s hallmark freshness.
Frizzante (Lightly Sparkling)
Frizzante wines are bottled underlower pressure (usually around 1–2.5 bar), which gives them their softer, more delicate sparkle. The bubbles are lighter, less persistent and feel gentler on the palate.
This style is often sealed with a screw cap or a simple string closure rather than a traditional cork and cage, reflecting its more casual, everyday nature.
In the glass, Frizzante tends to feel:
- Lighter and more subtle
- Less foamy, with a softer mousse
- Easy-going and refreshing
It’s the kind of Prosecco you might reach for at a relaxed lunch or as a low-key aperitif.
Spumante is the more familiar style, bottled under higher pressure (typically 3–5 bar), which creates those lively, persistent bubbles and that satisfying “pop” when opened.
Because of the higher pressure, Spumante must be sealed with a cork and wire cage, and it generally has a more structured, energetic feel.
In the glass, you’ll notice:
- Finer, more persistent bubbles
- A fuller texture and more pronounced mousse
- Greater intensity of flavour and aroma
Spumante often feels more celebratory and versatile, equally at home as an aperitif or with food.
