The Rioja Orientale used to be known as Rioja Baja, before local growers complained that the ‘Baja’ element (meaning ‘lower’) cast the sub-region in a poor light. The descriptor related to the altitude rather than quality of the vineyards, but where the quality is unimpeachable is in the Pedriza section of Tudelilla, an area of around 700 hectares covered in large ‘galet’ stones, similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe. That’s the source of this beautifully judged wine from a family-run bodega now run by the fourth generation, the energetic Carmelo Ortega.
Deep garnet coloured with a nose of dark red fruits and spices. Warming and mouth filling, with elegant and well balanced tannins.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
